FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY EVALUATION

PURPOSE OF THE EVALUATION

A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is used to establish the following:

  • Current condition, symptoms, treatment and response as well as other treatment options available

  • Current functional abilities and impairments

  • Current vocational ability

  • Current capacity to perform an occupation in the open labour market according to the job description (own or alternate) provided by client/employer in a verbal/written format prior to this assessment.

  • Potential for rehabilitation, treatment or training in order to improve her vocational functioning

  • Identification of suitable alternative occupations within her current employment

  • Exploration of adaptations and reasonable accommodations

  • Consultation with line manager to establish current vocational performance 

 

PURPOSE OF THE REPORT

The findings of the FCE are compiled into a report in order to assist the referrer to establish the capacity of the employee to perform an identified occupation and/or their ability to be reskilled or realigned. 

EXECUTION OF THE FCE

The assessment can be conducted virtually, if appropriate but otherwise carried out at the practice. An FCE normally takes 4-6 hours and comprises of a global assessment of function: cognition, psycho-social and physical. Standardised tools are used when relevant. Clients are requested to bring a list of medications, any medical documents, assistive devices (glasses, wheelchair, hearing aids, crutches etc.) and to wear comfortable clothing.
